The Gold Standard: Mom
Before the Beijing Olympics come to a close, I just wanted to follow up on my two Olympian obsessions: U. S. swimming sensations Michael Phelps and Dara Torres. By now, the entire globe knows about Michael Phelps and his extraordinary gold medal glories, but did you know what the 23-year-old swimming superstar wanted immediately after his eighth, historic win? “I kinda just want to see my mom,” Michael told a reporter when asked how he felt about his incredible accomplishment, according to an article in the current Sports Illustrated.
I want that quote on a t-shirt!!!!!! No matter how old one gets, how successful he or she becomes, it always comes back to the secure comfort and loving arms of mom. (Moms need their moms, too!)
And, although Torres didn’t capture the coveted gold, she did capture the respect and admiration of the world. At 41, the mother of a 2-year-old, showed viewers of all ages that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. Amen to that!

in Michael's heart! He actually said something similar on TV, and while I know that my 14-year-old son adores me (he'd better, or I'm unplugging the PlayStation), I'd hope that he not sound like such a "momma's boy" if he ever gets the chance to be on an international stage. I couldn't help but wonder, after Michael uttered those words, if he'd ever find a woman "good enough," either for him or for his mother. I hope he doesn't end up lonely.
